Villa Orchidée

The North, Martinique at its wildest

Rainforest, rivers, waterfalls, banana plantations and historic rum distilleries: the North Atlantic coast is the most unspoilt part of Martinique. The villa sits just outside Le Lorrain, 3 minutes from the N1 highway, so the whole North is within easy driving distance.

Nature and hiking

  • Mount Pelée (25 min): Martinique's volcano and the island's highest point (1,397 m), with many hiking trails. Read our guide
  • Gorges de la Falaise (Ajoupa-Bouillon): walk up the river with a guide to a waterfall hidden in the forest.
  • The Grand-Rivière – Le Prêcheur trail: a legendary coastal hike at the very tip of the island.

Rum and heritage

  • JM Distillery (Macouba): AOC agricultural rum, made at the foot of Mount Pelée.
  • Saint-James Distillery (Sainte-Marie): a tour and tasting at the heart of Martinique's rum history.
  • Saint-Pierre: the former capital, destroyed by the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902. Explore its ruins and heritage on foot.
  • Maison du Cacao (Le Lorrain, 7 min): opened in 2026, it tells the story from cocoa pod to chocolate bar, with tastings and a shop of Martinican producers. Booking may be required, so check before you go.

Beaches

  • Le Lorrain beach (15 min): a favourite with surfers.
  • Anse Charpentier (Sainte-Marie): 800 m of grey sand lined with coconut palms, one of the most photogenic beaches in the North. Swimming is prohibited: come for the walk and to watch experienced surfers.
  • For calm swimming: the beaches of Le Carbet (35 min) on the Caribbean coast, or those of the Caravelle peninsula in Trinité (35 min). On the Atlantic side the sea is often rough: better admired than swum in.
