Villa Orchidée

Hiking Mount Pelée

Martinique's volcano rises to 1,397 m at Le Chinois, its highest point. It is one of the finest hikes on the island: rainforest, a high plateau and, on a clear day, views over both coasts.

From Villa Orchidée, the most popular trailhead is a 25-minute drive away. Here is how to choose your trail, when to go and what to bring.

Which trail should you choose?

L'Aileron, from Morne-Rouge
A 7.6 km loop from the Aileron car park (824 m). Allow 4 to 6 hours and about 650 m of elevation gain. Moderate to difficult: the easiest option for a first climb, with a marked trail and the summit plateau reachable in a morning.

Grande Savane, from Le Prêcheur
A full day's walk with about 470 m of elevation gain. For fit hikers.

The northern slope, from Grand-Rivière or Macouba
About 9 hours return and 1,300 m of elevation gain. For experienced hikers only.

When to go

From December to March, during the dry season. Set off early in the morning: clouds often gather over the summit by late morning. Avoid the hike if it has rained recently, as the trails become very slippery.

What to bring

  • Hiking boots and poles
  • A waterproof windbreaker: it gets cool and windy at altitude
  • At least 2 litres of water per person and a snack
  • A cap and sunscreen
  • A head torch for a pre-dawn start

A guide is not compulsory, but recommended for the northern slope or in uncertain weather. In an emergency, call 112.
